Explore Higashiyama, Kyoto's historic heart

The Ancient Kyoto tour is a walking journey through Higashiyama, Kyoto's most famous and most atmospheric district. Its southern and northern halves each have their own charm — magnificent temples, narrow stone-paved lanes and hidden corners of nature — and we explore both.

Following in the footsteps of the Heian nobility (Heian-kyo was Kyoto's original name), you will experience traditional, tranquil Kyoto with cultural roots reaching back to the 8th century.

Tour highlights

  • Take in the city views from the wooden stage of Kiyomizu-dera
  • Browse craft shops and tea houses on Ninen-zaka and Sannen-zaka
  • See the giant torii and vermilion halls of Heian Shrine
  • Visit the refined gardens of Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion)
  • Stroll the canal-side Philosopher's Path, famous for cherry blossoms

If time allows, you can also visit the beautiful and lesser-known Kodaiji, Kenninji (Kyoto's oldest Zen temple) or Fushimi Inari Shrine.

Places you will visit

Kodaiji, Kenninji and Fushimi Inari Shrine can be added if time allows.

Kiyomizu-dera

Kiyomizu-dera

A wooden stage built into the hillside without nails, thirteen meters above the slope, with a panoramic view over Kyoto. Named after the spring that still runs at the foot of the hill.

Ninen-zaka and Sannen-zaka

Ninen-zaka and Sannen-zaka

Two stepped lanes climbing toward Kiyomizudera, protected as a preservation district. They are among the places in Kyoto where the traditional streetscape is best preserved: wooden façades, stone steps, and no overhead cables.

Two of Kyoto's most attractive streets
Heian Shrine

Heian Shrine

A partial replica of Kyoto's original imperial palace, built in 1895 for the city's 1,100th anniversary. Vermilion halls, a vast gravel courtyard, and one of Kyoto's finest gardens behind them.

Ginkakuji Temple

Ginkakuji Temple

Also known as the Silver Pavilion, built in 1482 as a retirement villa for a shogun who modeled it on his grandfather's Golden Pavilion, it was left in plain wood and became the template for Japanese restraint: the tea ceremony, ikebana, and the aesthetics that followed all trace back here.

Philosopher's Path

Philosopher's Path

A two-kilometer canal-side walk lined with cherry trees, between Ginkakuji and Nanzenji. Named after the philosopher who walked it daily on his way to Kyoto University.

Fushimi-inari shrine

Fushimi-inari shrine

Founded in 711 and dedicated to Inari, the deity of rice and, by extension, of prosperity in business. Around ten thousand gates, or torii, stand on the mountain, the oldest of them dating from the Edo period. The stone foxes along the way are Inari's messengers. It is Kyoto's most visited site, and the only one of its scale open day and night.
