Kyoto's most iconic sights in one day

Our top-rated Classic Kyoto tour brings you to the places that most represent the majesty of Japan's ancient capital. Focusing on western Kyoto, an area framed by green mountains, the route includes four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, each with its own story and character.

Along the way your guide brings to life the history of Buddhism in Japan — especially Zen, which grew into a world-renowned practice and shaped Japanese gardens, architecture, tea and art. You will see how these ideas were absorbed into everyday Japanese culture.

Tour highlights

  • Taste local snacks in Nishiki Market, “Kyoto's kitchen”

Kinkakuji Temple (The Golden Pavilion)

Kinkakuji Temple (The Golden Pavilion)

The Golden Pavilion, covered in gold leaf and mirrored in the pond below. Built as a shogun's retirement villa and turned into a Zen temple after his death, it is one of Kyoto's most emblematic landmarks.

Ryoanji

Ryoanji

Japan's most famous Zen rock garden: fifteen stones on raked gravel, best seen early, before the veranda fills. The grounds also hold a large pond garden from the twelfth century, which most visitors walk past without noticing.

UNESCO World Heritage Site
Arashiyama

Arashiyama

Kyoto's western edge, where the Katsura River meets wooded hills. Known for its bamboo grove, and worth the walk beyond it: temples, riverside paths, and the Togetsukyo bridge.

Tenryu-ji temple

Tenryu-ji temple

The principal Zen temple of Arashiyama, founded in 1339. Its pond garden is the oldest in Japan to survive in its original form, with the surrounding hills built into the composition.
